HOW TO INTERVIEW SUCCESSFULLY
PREPARING FOR THE INTERVIEW
The secret is PREPARATION. Too
many candidates don't seem to know what they're looking for, what
the job requires or even what the employer's basic business is.
WHY US?
It's absolutely essential that you research each company before
being interviewed the first time. This permits you to be prepared to
answer that pointed question-"Why are you interested in our
company?"
WHAT QUESTIONS DO YOU HAVE ABOUT US?
To be successful, an interview
must be an exchange of ideas and information.
In phrasing your questions, try to convey:
- Interest. Ask in-depth questions about the company, its organizational chart, profit and loss statements, projected capital growth, new technology, etc.
- Motivation. Demonstrate that you have long-range goals and are willing to work hard to achieve those goals. Focus on questions concerning career opportunities for outstanding employees.
YOUR APPEARANCE
An applicant's appearance is
extremely important to Interviewers. It's a key element in that
first impression; which is always a lasting impression. Maintain a
business like and professional appearance at all times.
THE Do's OF INTERVIEWING
- Shake hands firmly - a limp handshake is indicative of a lack of confidence.
- Greet the interviewer by surname, using the correct pronunciation
- Remain standing until offered a chair. Once seated maintain good posture
- Establish and maintain eye contact - But don't stare
- Be tactfully aggressive and self-confident - Don't be overbearing, loud or smug.
- Think before you speak - A disorganized answer is an indicator of a disorganized thought process.
- Answer questions in detail, being as specific as possible - A non-detailed "yes" or "no" tells the interviewer absolutely nothing, and suggests disinterest.
- End the interview with a warm "thank you. Follow-up your interview with a letter of thanks for the time that was spent with you, re-emphasizing your interest in the position.
BE PREPARED TO ANSWER QUESTIONS LIKE
Most interviews take the form of questions and answers. Some commonly asked questions you can expect and must prepare for are:
- What are your short range and long-range goals?
- What do you look for in a position?
- Are you a leader?
- What can you do for us that someone else cannot do?
- What is your philosophy of management?
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- Why do you want to leave your current job?
DON'T HESITATE TO ASK FOR THE JOB!
Remember, successful interviews are a direct result of the effort you put into them.
